Maryland Driving School: What You Need To Know

If you’ve been charged with drinking and driving, you may need to attend a DWI school as part of your penalty if you are found guilty. You may be unsure of what to expect or what you will learn at DWI school. Here’s what you need to know.

Not Every Offender is Eligible for DWI School in Maryland

Many people assume that if you are arrested for drunk driving that you will be able to attend a DWI school to help your case. This is not always true — some individuals are not eligible for DWI classes. For example, you may not be eligible for DWI school if:

  • You are arrested for your second or third DWI
  • You’ve already attended DWI school in Maryland
  • Your BAC was unreasonably high at the time of your arrest
  • You caused an accident that resulted in critical injury or death

Even your case involves one or more of the above factors, your attorney may still be able to persuade the court to be lenient and allow you to attend DWI school if it can be shown that you would benefit from the instruction.

What Do You Learn in DWI School?

The information covered in DWI school is what one might expect — first and foremost, it outlines the dangers of drunk driving and its consequences. The material used may be graphic in nature, however, it’s designed to impact the offender in a way that will lead to better future choices.

For individuals with an addiction to alcohol, counseling is typically offered. A sobriety program or additional counseling may be recommended.

An assessment may be done to determine whether or not you are considered to be at risk for a repeat offense. If this is not your first time in DWI school, it’s more likely that you will be considered at risk for repeat offenses unless you can provide proof to the contrary. An assessment that states the offender is at a low risk for a repeat offense may be used as a tool to secure a lighter sentence.
